Gazette du Bon Ton

From 1912 to1925 (with time out for the war years) the Gazette du Bon Ton set the tone for sophisticated style and taste. As a periodical, it was designed to be both expensive and exclusive. It appeared about ten times a year and appealed to the urban, well-bred leisure class of the jazz age. As a publication, the pages were loose and not bound and enclosed within a cover. The articles concerned entertainment with emphasis on travel, theater, restaurants and or haute coutre fashion .

The Gazette attracted many of the leading artists of the period to design plates for the publication featuring the latest fashions sometimes in a whimsical or fanciful setting. The latest creations were displayed from the top Paris fashion houses - Lanvin, Worth, Paquin, and Poiret. Illustrations in the Gazette appeared both in the text and as separate plates or planches. The planches were done by hand in the pochoir stencil process (see [ Information ]  page on this site) and were highly coveted as decorative  prints. The Gazette was able to obtain many of the top art deco artists to illustrate the publication including George Barbier, George Lepape, Raoul Dufy, Thayht, A.E. Marty, Pierre Brissaud and others. The celebrated artists were also known in other areas of the art world as painters, illustrators, poster designers, fashion and costume illustrators, etc.

The Gazette maintained an image of the carefree style of the era between the intervening world wars. It is estimated that about 2,000 issues were published each year. Complete sets are very rare and the prints enjoy a strong response from decorators and collectors.  Plates from the Gazette are often reproduced in catalogs, calendars and advertisements to symbolize the art deco period.

Journal des Dames

The Journal des Dames (1912 to 1914) was one of three celebrated limited edition periodicals that appeared at the start of the art deco period. Its audience was similar to that of the Gazette du Bon Ton. It concentration was in the fashion world of the time and was celebrated in the highly sophisticated plates that were part of each issue. Using the pochoir stencil process (see [ Information ]  page on this site) each plate blended delicacy and color with the fashion of the day often against a background setting. Each plate appealed both to fashion connoisseurs and to collectors of fine prints.

Only 1,279 copies of the album were produced and complete sets are very rare. The Journal appeared  three time a month and the text filled only eight pages and typically contained poetry, fashion, belles letters, and lifestyle leisure articles written by contemporary writers such as Jean Cocteau, Comtess de Noailles and Anatole France. Each issue contained about two to five unbound pochoir plates. The annual subscription to the Journal was 100 French francs.

The Journal  illustrated fashion from the major Parisian houses and often used many of the same artists as the Gazette including George Barbier, George Lepape, etc.
