| From 1912 to1925 (with time
out for the war years) the Gazette du Bon Ton set
the tone for sophisticated style and taste. As a periodical, it was
designed to be both expensive and exclusive. It appeared about ten times a year and appealed to the urban, well-bred
leisure class
of the jazz age. As a publication, the pages were loose and not bound
and enclosed within a cover.
The articles concerned entertainment with emphasis on travel, theater,
restaurants and or haute coutre fashion . The Gazette attracted many of the leading artists of the period to
design plates for the publication featuring the latest fashions sometimes
in a whimsical or fanciful setting. The latest creations were displayed
from the top Paris fashion houses - Lanvin, Worth, Paquin, and Poiret. Illustrations
in the Gazette appeared both in the text and as separate plates or
planches. The planches were done by hand in the pochoir stencil process
(see [ Information ] page on this site) and were highly coveted as decorative prints.
The Gazette was able to obtain many of the top art deco artists to
illustrate the
publication including George Barbier, George Lepape, Raoul Dufy, Thayht,
A.E. Marty, Pierre Brissaud and others. The celebrated artists were also
known in other areas of the art world as painters, illustrators, poster
designers, fashion and costume illustrators, etc. The Gazette maintained an image of
the carefree style of the era between the intervening world wars. It is estimated
that about 2,000 issues were published each year. Complete sets are very
rare and the prints enjoy a strong response from decorators and
collectors. Plates from the Gazette
are often reproduced in catalogs, calendars and advertisements to
symbolize the art deco period. Also see Artist Biographies and

| The Journal des Dames
(1912 to 1914) was one of three celebrated limited edition periodicals
that appeared at the start of the art deco period. Its audience was
similar to that of the Gazette du Bon Ton. It concentration was
in the fashion world of the time and was celebrated in the highly sophisticated
plates that were part of each issue. Using the pochoir stencil process (see [ Information ] page on this site) each plate blended delicacy
and color with the fashion of the day often against a background setting. Each
plate appealed both to fashion connoisseurs and to collectors of fine
prints. Only 1,279 copies of the album were produced and complete sets are
very rare. The Journal appeared three time a month and the text filled
only eight pages and typically contained poetry, fashion,
belles letters, and lifestyle leisure articles written by contemporary writers such as
Jean Cocteau, Comtess de Noailles and Anatole France. Each issue
contained about two to five unbound pochoir plates. The annual subscription to
the Journal was 100 French francs.
The Journal illustrated fashion from the major Parisian
houses and often used many of the same artists as the Gazette
including George Barbier, George Lepape, etc.

d'Aujourd'hui was one of the three great fashion and lifestyle
publications of the Art Deco period. It was published between 1912 to
1922. The cover of the publication was hard and the insides were loose
pages of poetry, fashion and entertainment. Accompanying the text were
excellent pochoir prints capturing the exuberant high style of the
times. The limited edition publication consisted of only 300 copies. The
plates are very rare and highly collectible and decorative.

| Chanson de Bilitis was a collaboration
between F.L.Schmied, the master wood engraver, and George Barbier. Barbier produced drawing
reminiscent of fine Greek vase
painting for this album. Using brilliant colors and a classic technique
he entrusted his work to Schmied, who was considered the finest color
wood engraver of the period. There are 20 full page plates and 48 color
in text illustrations. Only 133 albums produced.

Decoratives contains 48 surreal and abstract design prints of animals, sea life,
insects and birds. As an artist in the art deco movement Serge Gladky
concentrated in the cubist technique to generate whimsical and inspired creations
in a geometric motif. Utilizing the pochoir process his creativity and use
of color brought about a change in modern design. His work is recognized
in the forefront of modern abstract art.

Paul Poiret was the famous album of twelve
pochoir prints by George Lepape for Paul Poiret. The important prints had
a significant influence in the world of couture fashion. Lepape was the
favorite illustrator of Paul Poiret. The flowing garments designed by
Poiret followed the lines of a woman's body. The style was influenced by
oriental design and classic costumes of the Ballet Russes.
There were only 1000 print sets created in

| L'Odyssee
is a
magnificent folio from Homer's "The Odyssey" depicting the
adventures of Odysseus on his return voyage from the Battle of Troy. There
are many fine plates of Ulysse (his Roman name), Telemaque, Penelope,
Athena and various heroic scenes and antagonists.
It consists of ninety-eight Greek
mythology prints and individual test illustrations that accompany the
prints. The prints and illustrations are reminiscent of ancient Minoan
and Mycenaean art rendered in an art deco style.
The prints were each produced on vellum
and were hand colored in gouache by the master illustrator Jean Saude
with woodblock engraving by Theo Schmied (son of F.L.Schmied).
Printing was completed by F.L. Schmied, who is considered the finest
woodblock printer of the 20th century. Only 300 portfolios were
produced in 1930. |

| La Mode Illustree was
considered the finest Victorian fashion publication. Each issue contained
various articles
about fashionable life in the late 1800's. Highlighting the issue were hand colored
fashion prints
from Paris of the latest styles. The prints are beautifully hand colored
and highly decorative with
both women and children in various period backgrounds. |
